Category 1
Furnished single rooms in traditional student halls (with a washbasin in
each room) or in shared flats (known in German as a WG – Wohngemeinschaft)
with a shared kitchen and bathroom. Rooms are usually 10 square metres
or larger in some cases. In shared flats, rooms may be considerably larger
(15 square metres or more).
This type of accommodation is affordable and provides good opportunities
to meet people and make friends quickly.
Price range: rent including heating costs from approx. 140 to 170 Euros;
More modern and larger types of accommodation cost slightly more, sometimes
up to a maximum of 215 Euros (2005 prices). There are also additional costs
for electricity in shared flats.
Category 1a (only in Erlangen)
As for Category 1, but slightly smaller rooms (8 to 9 square metres) usually without a washbasin in traditional halls of residence with all the typical facilities. Top central locations! Cheap prices with everything included from 110 to 137 Euros.
Category 2

Rent prices (for 2005) average from 170 to 200 Euros, in some cases slightly less (from 146 Euros), or slightly more (for larger apartments in new facilities, maximum 231 Euros). There are additional costs for electricity which each individual pays to the local energy supplier (approx. 25 Euros per month).
Categorie 3
Double apartments and flats for 2 people (joint applications only!) Flats for families with or without children. Some flats also include access to childcare facilities for children between the ages of 3 and 6 years.
