Accommodation for students on programmes

Programmstudierende are those students who receive a "befristete Zulassung" (temporary admission) limited to up to one year, for example in the framework of programmes like Erasmus or Direct Exchange, or students who receive scholarships from foundations and who will not acquire an academic degree at FAU.
Graduate scholarhip holders and Ph.D. students are requsted to contact the private student residences or the University Guest Houses only.

Friedrich-Alexander University has no housing agency for incoming students. Each student has to try to obtain accommodation on his/her own.
It is vital to start looking and applying for an accommodation early enough. It the beginning of the semester, thousands of new students will compete against each other. In order to enhance your chances, it is vital to be flexible as far as the location of the accommodation is concerned. If you do not find something right in the city centre, you should also consider moving to the surrounding area. The cities of Forchheim, Uttenreuth, Fürth and Herzogenaurach are nearby and very well connected by public transport.

Studentenwerk-Erlangen-Nürnberg "Kontingentzimmer"

The Studentenwerk der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg owns and administates a number of public student residences in Erlangen and Nürnberg. A limited number of so-called “Kontingentzimmer” has been reserved for Programmstudierende (e.g. Erasmus, see above). There are by far not enough rooms to house all applicants! You are urged to apply in parallel to private residences! Do not rely on surely receiving a room from Studentenwerk only!

Application procedure for Kontingentzimmer

After having applied for admission to studies as an Exchange student (Programmstudent, see above), you will receive a letter of admission. In addition, you will receive the application form that entitles you to opt for one of the "Kontingentzimmer". degree-seeking-students are NOT elegible for thos rooms! Please send you application directly to the Wohnservice of the Studentenwerk until:

You have the choice if your contract is to end on the 28th February OR 31st March, or on 31st August OR 30th September.

Note that the allocation of a room cannot be guaranteed, even where applications are made in time, as the number of rooms is limited.The mailing address is to be found in the appplication form. If there are still rooms available, you will receive a notification from the Studentenwerk by email only (approx. in January / July). There will only be one offer for each student, due to the high demand.You ought to decide quickly if you want to accept the offer. Please keep in mind that your reservation will be binding. Within two weeks after the notification, you will have to pay the rent for the first month of your contracts as well as the deposit for the room. Make sure to comply with the term, otherwise you will forfeit your reservation and the room will be given to another student on the waiting list. No exceptions can be made. When transferring the money, it is vital that you indicate your full name as well as the “Wohneinheitsnummer” of your future room. The following monthly rents will be debited directly form your new current account in Germany, once you have communicated your bank details to the Studentenwerk.

Terms and conditions

Rooms can be rented on a semester-basis only. Rent must be paid for the entire semester even if you wish to move out before the end of semester. The rental contract is valid for 5 or 6 months with an option to extend, or for 12 months. Since you receive a fixed-term lease contract, it is not possible to terminate the contract before it's expiration.
For exchange and programme students, however, the maximum rental period is restricted to one year. Room exchange is not possible in any circumstances.
We ask you to understand that if you decline the original offer, no further offer of a room can be made. Please keep in mind: if you made a reservation for a room though an official application, you are obliged to sign the lease contact. Please do only apply, if you really want a room!
It is also important to note that electricity is usually an additional charge in most student halls. The average cost is around €10 per month.
