During the semester, the University Language Centre 
provides
a wide range of language courses in German and many other languages for enrolled
students of all ability levels. A list of the
courses on offer can be found on the Language Centre website. Registration
usually takes place during the first session of the course.
Additionally, there are adult education centres, the “Bildungszentrum” in
Nuremberg and the “Volkshochschule” in
Erlangen which offer a number of German language courses at different levels.
The offer extends from four-week intensive courses to courses lasting for a whole
semester. Private language schools also exist, but are much more expensive.
Students looking for a direct language exchange with a German native speaker may be interested in the tandem programme. Sprachduo is the name given to this free programme which enables students of different nationalities to improve their language skills and get to know German native speakers or indeed other nationalities by spending time with a language partner. The idea behind Sprachduo is that you learn from each other's native language in a social context. Sprachduo can help you to establish initial contact, and then it's up to you how often you meet and whether the tandem works out!
