In the cities of Erlangen, Fürth and Nuremberg, private institutions and the University offer a wide and varied range of cultural and leisure activities and events.


Events organised by the Central Office for International Affairs

Throughout the semester the international office organises excursions, film evenings and get-togethers for international students, where they can get to know each other. Students also have the opportunity to take trips to other towns and cities in Germany.

The programme of events, or “Betreuungsprogramm” (“Kultur- and Freizeitprogramm”) is published in October for the winter semester, and in April for the summer semester. Getting involved

A number of University and external institutions host a variety of events, for example the Volkshochschule Erlangen and the Bildungszentrum Nuremberg (lectures, seminars, courses, field trips) or the Collegium Alexandrinum in Erlangen (lectures). The Academic Choir, the Collegium Musicum at the University, the University sports centre, sports clubs and theatre groups provide opportunities for you to became actively involved in University life. The University also has an English Dramatic Society, a student theatre group which performs a play every semester in English.

Music

The University

At the University of Erlangen there are many opportunities to pursue your musical interests. The Academic Choir, the Collegium Musicum (symphony orchestra) the Big Band and the Blechbläser ensemble (brass band) as well as several other music groups rehearse weekly in designated rooms at the University.

University sports

The Sports’ Centre at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg provides courses for Sports’ students at the University. During the semester it also offers a broad range of sporting activities for all students.

The choice of pubs, cafes and bars in Erlangen and Nuremberg is wide and varied.

The region is also famous for the number and charm of its beer gardens, where in summer you can enjoy a cool drink and a bite to eat (“Brotzeit” = German equivalent of a picnic) whilst enjoying traditional music. Particularly popular is the annual beer festival (“Bergkirchweih”) in Erlangen and the Kettensteg-Biergarten in Nuremberg.

Day trips and sightseeing

There are many interesting and charming destinations for sightseeing and day trips (or longer) in the Erlangen and Nuremberg region. The surrounding countryside is beautiful (Fränkische Schweiz, Hersbrucker Schweiz, Fränkische Seenlandschaft, Maintal) and there are many towns and villages of historical and architectural interest (Bamberg, Bayreuth, Würzburg, Ansbach, Rothenburg ob der Tauber and many others). Munich, the capital city of Bavaria, with its many museums, theatres, and galleries is only 1 1/2 to 2 hours away by train. Catholic Student Community (KHG) and Protestant Student Group (ESG)

Catholic and Protestant student groups organize a variety of events for all students each semester ranging from film evenings, to football tournaments and outings and much more.
