Studium Internationale - International Study Programme
How to understand the world
The Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuernberg maintains relations with several hundred universities worldwide. Currently, almost every 6 th student comes from abroad. The university engages in many exchange programmes, thus every year around 500 students are supported to go abroad and to gain experiences in other countries. Due to the high exchange rate, a new course catalogue was created to improve the exchange activities and to prepare students for a stay abroad and to help international students to overcome a possible cultural shock. This project is called “Studium Internationale”.
This project is a meeting platform for everyone: foreigners and Germans. It therefore contains language courses especially designed for foreigners or cultural background classes about Germany. The general aim is to break with conventional patterns, to overcome prejudices and to gain competence to deal with unknown environments. In a nutshell: it's mainly about intercultural competence.
Another part of the course catalogue is imparting “soft skills”. It is not just important to acquire knowledge, but moreover to be able to use and present this knowledge in interaction with others. This will also be a major requirement for future profesional careers.
The “Studium Internationale” is modelled on the idea of a “Studium Generale”. Instead of deepening the studies in one specific field, the “Studium Internationale” is offering a broad variety of different modules. European Credit Points (ECTS) or other certificates can be awarded. Therefore the “Studium Internationale” supplements the regular course catalogue and provides a great opportunity for students of any field of studies.
The current course catalogue can be found in the university syllabus (Vorlesungsverzeichnis) in the following category: “Vortragsreihen: Studium Internationale”. The brochure is divided into four parts: Germany and German Civilization, German-as-a-foreign-language, International Themes and last but not least Soft Skills. Many modules are especially designed for international students, but German students are also welcome to participate.
