Engineering of Advanced Materials (Cluster of Excellence)
The Cluster of Excellence Engineering of Advanced Materials – Hierarchical Structure Formation for Functional Devices (EAM) is the only interdisciplinary research collaboration of its type in Germany to focus on materials science and process technology. Its research centers on the fundamental and applied aspects of designing and creating novel high-performance materials. Situated at the Friedrich-Alexander-University it is part of the Excellence Initiative of the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), Germany's largest research funding organization. -
Erlangen graduate school in advanced optical technologies
The Erlangen Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT) was established at the FAU in November 2006 within the framework of the Excellence Initiative. The scientific focus is laid on optics and optical technologies which are considered to form key technologies of the 21st century. Optical technologies are widely applied in science and industry, for example, in information and communication technology, in process engineering, in production engineering, in energy and environmental technology and in medicine. -
Bavaria California Technology Center (BaCaTeC)
With the help of the Bavaria California Technology Center (BaCaTeC), the Free State of Bavaria supports cooperations between Scientists in Bayern and California within the “High-Tech Initiative Future Bavaria”. As a joint arrangement of all Bavarian universities, BaCaTeC is located at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. -
Central Institute for Research on Teaching and Learning (ZiLL)
ZiLL initiates, supports and consolidates interdisciplinary research in teaching and learning at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. ZiLL projects analyse teaching and learning processes and their basic conditions at all stages in life. They take into account teaching and learning in both school environments and out of school contexts.

Institute of Advanced Materials and Processes (ZMP)
The research of the Institute of Advanced Materials and Processes (Zentralinstitut für Neue Materialien und Prozesstechnik, ZMP) of the University Erlangen-Nuremberg is focused on interdisciplinary topics being located inbetween Material Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry and Physics. In a young an highly innovative environment, new material concepts and the corresponding production techniques concerning lightweight constructional components are developed. The advancement of ideas being formed in fundamental research to the state of prototyping forms the basic goal. -
Center for Regional and Area Studies
The main area of interest at the Central Institute for Regional Research (ZI) is interdisciplinary research on regions. It focuses on North and Latin America, Europe, Franconia, the Middle East and Pacific Asia.

The centre coordinates courses and work experience for all teaching courses whilst supporting and coordinating course guidance and quality development for individual courses for future teachers.

Centre for Applied Ethics and Science Communication
The Centre for Applied Ethics and Science Communication (ZIEW) has set itself the task of compiling and coordinating the various activities in the fields of applied ethics, philosophy of science and scientific communication that are undertaken by different faculties and departments at the FAU with a view to presenting them to a wider public. -
FAU Graduate School
Excellent support for young academics is a priority at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. An important step in pursuing this aim was the foundation of the FAU Graduate School. Our overall goals are specific support for young academics and especially for women in academia, a focus on international and interdisciplinary work as well as the integration of international doctoral candidates. The aim in all this is to achieve and maintain the highest quality of education and supervision for doctoral candidates at the FAU. -
Bavarian Academic Center for Latin America (BayLat)
BayLAT was created to focus on, network and deepen existing cooperative programmes between Bavaria and Latin America for research staff and student exchanges, as well as research projects, events and publications.

FAU Busan Campus
Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) is the first German university to establish a branch campus in the Republic of Korea. In November 2009, its campus project received approval from the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The FAU Busan Branch Campus offers a Graduate School with a master degree program in Chemical and Bioengineering and a research center. -
Zentralinstitut für Medizintechnik (ZIMT)
Since its foundation on 1 December 2009, the Central Institute for Medical Technology (ZiMT) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg has taken on the task of initiating supra-regional and international cutting-edge research and teaching in medical technology. It is intended to bring all of the university's medical technology resources under one roof and to improve coordination with cooperation partners' resources.
