central institute for research into teaching and learning
Research into teaching and learning uses empirical studies as the basis for an analysis of the processes of intentional teaching, the informal assimilation of knowledge and the retention of acquired competences to an advanced age. The aim is to improve these processes by developing new methods based on the results of the studies. The underlying concept is that of "lifelong learning", continuing education from childhood to senior citizenship.
At the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg research in these fields is being conducted by a variety of disciplines and departments; for example in General Pedagogy, Psychology, Teaching Methodology for subjects for all school types, Psychogerontology, and by institutions such as the In-service Centre for Higher Education and the Department of Primary School Research. As desiderata we have targeted, among others, the support and development of science teaching, and didactic work in the areas of medicine and technology.
The "Central Institute for Research into Teaching and Learning" is based at the Faculty of Education. We are currently engaged in the process of bringing together colleagues from relevant disciplines; for example, Neurology, Christian Media Studies and Informatics (Artificial Intelligence) from all eleven faculties. Interdisciplinary projects are to be developed, coordinated and, not least important, made feasible through external funding.
