The Cluster of Excellence Engineering of Advanced Materials – Hierarchical Structure Formation for Functional Devices (EAM) is the only interdisciplinary research collaboration of its type in Germany to focus on materials science and process technology. Its research centers on the fundamental and applied aspects of designing and creating novel high-performance materials. Situated at the Friedrich-Alexander-University it is part of the Excellence Initiative of the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), Germany's largest research funding organization.

The Bavarian Laser Centre (blz) is a research institute under private law in the surroundings of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. It was founded in 1993. Today, it is one of the centres of applied laser research in Germany.

The Research Association Molded Interconnect Devices 3-D MID e.V. was founded in Erlangen in 1993 in order to support the numerous, interdisciplinary tasks in the introduction of the MID-technology. For this, the specific knowledge from the various disciplines needs to be bundled and exchanged. The Research Association comprises companies as well as research institutes concerned with design and engineering, materials, tooling and molding, metallization, structuring, and the downstream processing with assembly, connection technology and connectors as well as users of the technology.

In collaboration with AUDI AG a regional skills centre has been set up in Ingolstadt offering young academics unique working conditions to render theoretical knowledge applicable in practical situations. It aims to further develop automotive electronics by means of new methods for simulation, design, data analysis and safety technology.
