Financial Support
Apart from personal means or external funding through cooperation projects with industry and business, most doctoral candidates receive financial support through temporary employment as academic staff or from scholarships.
Scholarships
The main source of scholarships for international
applicants interested in doctoral work in Germany is the German
Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) which has offices
and information centres around the world.
An overview of further sources of financial support is provided by the Researcher's Mobility Portal of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Apart from scholarships offered by structured programmes, financial support for graduate studies in Germany is offered by a number of organisations for the promotion of young talent.
Further information on financial support or specific foundations is available through the databases of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V. and the Association of German Foundations (both in German).
As part of efforts to promote equal opportunities a number of scholarship opportunities exist for women in academia. Further information (in German) is available from the university's Equal Opportunities Office.
Bavaria also offers a number of scholarships for doctoral students. The local contact point for funding within the state-wide Elite Network of Bavaria is the Scholarship Office of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität.
Please note that you have to be nominated by a professor to be considered for an Elite scholarship. Independent applications are not possible!
Employment
Doctoral students in Germany are often employed as temporary academic
staff (wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterinnen or
Mitarbeiter or wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte). Apart from their doctoral
work, such employment includes teaching and administrative duties. Current
vacancies at the university are listed under the category "Wissenschaftlicher
Dienst" in the pull down menu “Berufsgruppe” towards the end of the
page.
