FAU Graduate School
Mission Statement
Excellent support for
young scientists is a priority at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität.
An important step in pursuing this aim was the foundation of the FAU Graduate
School. Its goal is to strengthen structured supervision programmes (in
addition to existing models of individual supervision) for graduates working
towards a doctoral degree.
The FAU Graduate School plans to focus on international and interdisciplinary work as well as targeted programmes for women in academia. Furthermore, it will offer tailor-made courses in transferable and language skills as well as a social network for PhD students. Our aim in all this is to achieve and maintain the highest quality of education and supervision for PhD students at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität.

Structure
The FAU Graduate School is a central facility at the university.
It is an umbrella organisation for both disciplinary
graduate schools
and interdisciplinary doctoral programmes.
Steering Committee
The Graduate School is governed by a steering committee chaired by the
vice-president of the university responsible for graduates. The committee
will meet at least once each semester.
Disciplinary Graduate School
Disciplinary graduate schools are in the process of being set up.
Both the School of Humanities and Social Sciences
and the School of Engineering have already established such institutions.
Interdisciplinary Programmes
Graduate schools cutting across various academic fields are cornerstones
in supporting interdisciplinary and international work at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität.
The university currently hosts two such outstanding institutions: the Erlangen
Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT) funded by
the Excellence Initiative and the jointly run International
Max Planck Research School for Optics and Photonics (IMPRS). A further
graduate school will be established as part of the Excellence Cluster Engineering
of Advanced Materials.
Beyond those interdisciplinary schools the German Research Foundation (DFG) funds six Research Training Groups at Erlangen . Within the Bavarian Elite Network, the university participates in a further four International Doctoral Programmes.
