Wanted: Students who are willing to help

Students studying computer science and medical engineering have set up technical support for schools in Erlangen. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Maier, Chair of Computer Science 15 at FAU, the team of volunteers provides support to teachers, parents and children, free of charge.

They offer assistance and ideas in several languages, for example for problems with software or when choosing which hardware to buy. The support team can be contacted via e-mail or WhatsApp, and a website and a ticket system are currently being set up.

As demand for support of this kind in schools is so high, the team is looking for more students with a technical background to help. Students who would like to volunteer their knowledge and skills and help schools to improve their online teaching can write an e-mail to the team.

Further information and contact details of the support service is available on the Faculty of Engineering’s website.

How Andreas Maier is providing support with digitalisation to schools in Erlangen

Prof. Dr. Andreas Maier is not only the Chair of Computer Science 15 at FAU, but also father to a third-grader. When school pupils were sent home from school and switched to distance learning due to the coronavirus pandemic, Prof. Maier looked for ways of providing support to his son’s school. The five emergency measures Prof. Maier developed with this in mind have been published on medium.com (in German). An article about his initiative, which is now being used at all schools in Erlangen, has been published on nordbayern.de (in German).
