The chancellor is the head of the university administration and is responsible for budgetary matters. He is also responsible for the non-academic staff (with the exception of the clinic personnel) and is appointed by the State Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts on the university's recommendation.
As a civil servant, his is a life appointment.

- 1st October 1996 - 30th September 1999 state spokesman for the state universities and also both non-state universities in Bavaria
- 1st October 1992 - 11th June 1999 spokesman for the working group of university chancellors of the Federal Republic of Germany "Probleme der Hochschulmedizin" (problems of medicine at universities)
- Member of the working group for the consideration of performance criteria in calculating grants for research and teaching at Bavarian university hospitals. (inaugural meeting of the working group: 4th May 1999 ).
