Curriculum Vitae
Karl-Dieter Grüske, Prof. Dr., born in Erlangen in 1946, studied economics in Erlangen-Nuremberg and Munich. From 1972 until 1988 he was assistant and associate professor of Prof. H.C. Recktenwald at the Department of Economics of the Faculty of Business Administration, Economics and Social Sciences at the University Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 1978 he completed his doctoral thesis with “summa cum laude” on distribution effects of public budgeting. For his qualifying publication for professorship he received an award of the University Erlangen-Nuremberg and the highly endowed Wolfgang-Ritter-Preis (Bremen). His research also led him abroad to Indonesia in 1974, to Yemen in 1982, to China in 1985 and to the US in 1987.
From 1988 until 1990 he was scientific project manager in cooperation with Professor Meinhard Miegel at the Bonn Institute for Economics and Social Research. In 1990 he was offered a chair at the Bundeswehr University, Hamburg. In 1991 he took over the Chair for Economics, especially Public Finance, at the University Erlangen-Nuremberg. He is a member of all important societies and associations of his subject, has published three books and numerous scientific papers and is – among other editions – co-editor of the renowned edition of the “Klassiker der Nationalökonomie” (“Classics in Political Economy”).
Prof. Grüske’s knowledge makes him a member of several committees. In 1993 he was appointed to the Advisory Council for Family Affairs at the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth; since 1998 he serves as its vice chairman. Since 1997 he has been a member of the Advisory Council for Administrative Reform of the Hessian Ministries and Universities and of several committees for university reforms. He also is a member of the Research Committee for Economics of Education of the Verein für Socialpolitik. In 1999 he was called to the Advisory Council of the German Institute for Youth in Munich. Since 1993 he serves as chairman of the Gesellschaft für Finanzwissenschaftliche Forschung (Society for Research in Public Finance). Since 2007 he serves as vice chairman of the Universität Bayern e.V. (Universities of Bavaria Association). The same year he was elected as chairman of the advisory board for research migration at the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees). 2008 he was elected as vice-president of the German’s Rectors’ Conference.
From 1994 to 1996, Prof. Grüske was dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, Economics and Social Sciences, from 1996 to 2000 he served on the senate, and from 2000 to 2002 as Vice President of the University. Since April 1, 2002 he is President of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg. He was reelected in November 2005 for a term to expire in March 2010.
